As much as country music has become about partying, girls, and drinking beer it’s days like these when the genres’ roots shine through. Before it was about all that, country music was about family, doing what’s right, and honoring those that have served. Nowadays songs with those messages are few and far between. Artists such as Toby Keith, Brantley Gilbert, and Justin Moore stand apart when it comes to such music. Both Moore and Gilbert have singles on radio now honoring those who have served. Justin Moore’s “This Kind of Town” includes the line, “Tie a yellow ribbon on a tree to say thank you,” a sentiment to a common southern gesture to show support for the troops. Moore’s “One Hell of an Amen” opens with a verse honoring a man who’s died in battle, “Preacher said he died too young, over there totin’ that gun, for Uncle Sam and our freedom.” Country music needs more songs with these messages. So on Veteran’s Day it’s important to remember to thank those who have given their lives for this country.
This week is highlighted by the release of Sam Hunt’s debut album Montevallo. Additionally Gretchen Wilson released a full length LP entitled Here for the Party. It’s getting close to the holiday season and that means it’s time for holiday albums. Darius Rucker and Alan Jackson both released their own albums this week. As for singles Rodney Atkins leads the way with “Eat Sleep Love You Repeat.” And of course on the less side of things Taylor Swift’s 1989 was released late Sunday night.

October 21st is highlighted by the release of Little Big Town’s new album Pain Killer. However, that wasn’t the only new country music released today Gloriana released a new single entitled “Trouble.” It’s the track they opened their live sets with for most of the summer. Billy Currington released a new single entitled “Don’t It,” the same can be said for James Otto who has a new look to go along with his new song “Somewhere Tonight.” Chuck Wicks “Saturday Afternoon” and Steve Azar “Fly” finish off the new music, as both have new singles. On a pop-country, but more pop side of things Taylor Swift released another new track entitled “Welcome to New York” off of her upcoming album 1989 due out next weekend.

Justin Moore released a third single entitled “This Kind of Town” off of Off the Beaten Path to radio today. The song follows his cover of “Home Sweet Home” which failed to crack the top 25. However, Moore is a perfect two for two with his first two singles on the album as both have reached the peak position on the charts. “This Kind of Town” has a different sound. It’s far less party and far more slow drive down a backroad. Hometowns are at the center as Moore sings of all the things we have to be thankful for. “In this kind of town people stay together, nobody leaves unless they leave forever,” sings Moore as the song opens and again numerous times in the chorus. Overall, it has a song message, one similar to “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away,” a song that went number one. It’s somber, yet not too somber that people won’t want to listen. When it’s all said and done Justin Moore should be looking at his third top 15 hit with “This Kind of Town” and that’s something he can rest his hat on.
