Country Radio Comes to Worcester

Country radio is coming to central Massachusetts for the first time in over 20 years. WORC 98.9 will no longer play classic hits and will instead switch to country music. It’s a change that the station expects to be very successful.

Owned and operated by Cumulus Media the station will take a NASH Icons format. That means that listeners will be treated to the best of country music over the past couple of decades. Playlists will include songs from 90’s artists such as the Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, and Reba McEntire as well as the most popular artists of today. Despite the change of genres, the radio personalities will remain the same on the station. That’s good news for business as listeners should be familiar with those spinning the hits.

The switch to country happened on Friday October 31 and the station expects big listening numbers. Central Massachusetts was in need of a country station. The two major stations (102.5 and 98.1) don’t always come in well in the area and country fans should be quick to make the switch to 98.9. Expect the station to promote heavily over the next few months as they try to gain listenership.
