Former college football player and rising country music star Sam Hunt released his debut EP on Monday. The project titled “X2C” features four tracks including his current single “Leave the Night On”. Sam Hunt isn’t making traditional country music. It’s a pure mix of country lyrics and pop beats.
That doesn’t mean it isn’t excellent. It’s the kind of country music that is going to transcend genres and could easily be heard on pop radio in the future. Think Florida Georgia Line, with less big guitars. Hunt has a strong voice, and knows when to use it. He effortlessly transitions between singing and “talking” the words of his well written songs. The highlight of the EP is clearly “Leave the Night On”, but that takes nothing away from the three other tracks. “House Party” is not only perfect for house party, but also for a ride down a back road with your girl. “Ex to See” tells the story of being the guy used as payback. A strong back beat stands out as Hunt sings the pains associated with being that guy. The EP concludes with “Break Up in a Small Town” something that anyone from a small town is going to find relatable. A track that could double as a soft R&B, Hunt sings country based lyrics in a pop setting.
The EP is not going to please any country purists, but it serves as a strong coming up party for Georgia Boy Sam Hunt.
